Terrell Smith-Cole has carved out his identity at Central Penn College as a reliable and dynamic presence in the infield, splitting time at shortstop and second base over the past two seasons.

Originally from Brandywine, Maryland, Smith-Cole’s athletic journey didn’t start with just one sport; it started with several of them. From basketball to football to soccer, he competed across the board, but baseball was always where his natural ability stood out the most.

Despite his talent, playing at the collegiate level wasn’t always part of the plan. It wasn’t until his senior year of high school that he began to see a future for himself in the game beyond just playing for fun. That realization pushed him to take baseball more seriously and chase opportunities at the next level.

Before finding his home at Central Penn, Smith-Cole attended Bryant & Stratton College in Virginia Beach. During that time, he faced uncertainty and was close to walking away from the game altogether.

Everything changed with a single conversation. A call from Knights head coach Charles Stevens gave him a renewed sense of purpose. “Coach Stevens gave me an opportunity of a lifetime, and that’s all I needed to hear,” Smith-Cole said.

Since arriving on campus, his game has taken a noticeable leap. Playing under Stevens has allowed him to develop not only his skills but also his confidence, giving him the freedom to trust his instincts and make plays. This was evident in his first year with the Knights in 2025, as Smith-Cole was awarded the “Gold Glove” by Knightly News Co-Adviser and Knights play-by-play commentator Dr. Paul Miller in his annual awards column. But in 2026, Smith-Cole’s offensive prowess has continued to grow. As of the publishing of this article, Smith-Cole has a .315 batting average with 19 RBIs and 13 stolen bases, showing the continued improvement that has propelled the Knights throughout the season.

One of the biggest adjustments for Smith-Cole was the humbling nature of college athletics. After being a standout player in high school, he quickly realized that every athlete at the collegiate level brings that same level of talent and hunger. That shift in mindset pushed him to elevate his work ethic and approach the game with a new level of discipline.

Motivation, for Smith-Cole, comes from within the team. He credits his teammates and coaches for constantly pushing him and being a source of support through challenges both on and off the field.

As he heads into his final season, Smith-Cole is focused on leaving a lasting impression. He wants to be remembered as a player who played freely, gave maximum effort every day, and stayed true to the game he loves.

For the next generation of athletes, his message is clear: learn the game, study it, watch those who do it at a high level, and most importantly, play with passion.

Above all, Smith-Cole remains grateful. He expressed appreciation for his coaches, teammates, and the Central Penn community for standing behind him throughout his journey, one that almost ended early but instead turned into something worth remembering.
