As college students wrap up final exams or need a quick break from the summer term, Hollywood is releasing a fresh lineup of films.

From action-packed blockbusters to spine-tingling thrillers and family-friendly options, there is something for everyone.

As we edge into June, May has proven anything but quiet, delivering a quartet of standout films that thrilled audiences across genres.

May’s movies

The month opened with Marvel Studios’ “Thunderbolts,” a darker, more introspective entry into the Marvel Comics Universe, that united antiheroes like Yelena Belova and Bucky Barnes for a covert mission under Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. Exploring themes of redemption and identity, the film offers a fresh, nuanced take on the superhero genre.

Meanwhile, “Final Destination: Bloodlines,” hit the screen, breathing new life into the iconic horror franchise. Directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, the film follows college student Stefani Reyes as she uncovers a chilling generational curse.

The “Final Destination” series has long haunted audiences with its inventive, anxiety-inducing depictions of freak accidents, from plane crashes to rogue logs on highways—leaving a cultural imprint that redefined how a generation viewed everyday risks.

“Bloodlines” leans into this legacy while delivering a bittersweet farewell to fans with Tony Todd’s final performance as William Bludworth, a character who has long embodied the eerie, omniscient presence of death in the franchise. His portrayal is haunting and deeply emotional. Scenes carry thematic weight, serving as a bridge between the old and new while providing fans with a fitting and respectful sendoff to one of horror’s most iconic figures.

The 23rd of the month hits us with a double feature of the most anticipated movie, “Mission: Impossible–The Final Reckoning,” and the family favorite “Lilo & Stitch.

“The Final Reckoning” brings back familiar faces and ties up long-running storylines, offering a nostalgic yet thrilling experience for fans. Tom Cruise returns in his iconic role in this climactic chapter of Ethan Hunt’s saga. He takes on a high-stakes mission to stop a powerful rogue AI called The Entity from falling into the wrong hands. A modern and fitting storyline for the next generation. Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, the film combines high-octane action with emotional depth, serving as a fitting farewell to a beloved franchise.

Disney’s live-action remake of the 2002 animated classic follows Lilo (Maia Kealoha), a spirited Hawaiian girl who adopts Stitch (voiced again by Chris Sanders), a chaotic alien disguised as a dog.

As her older sister Nani (Sydney Agudong) tries to hold their small family together, the film explores themes of loss, belonging and “ohana.” Directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, the movie blends humor, emotion and updated visuals, with a new soundtrack combining Elvis hits and Hawaiian melodies.

The film has sparked some controversy over the decision to tone down the comedic cross-dressing element of the character Pleakley, originally known for his flamboyant disguises and gender-fluid presentation. Some fans felt this was an erasure of a unique and progressive trait from the original. Still, the remake remains a heartfelt tribute to its animated predecessor.

Thrills, dragons, plagues and racing legends

How to Train Your Dragon

Release Date: June 13
This live-action reimagining of DreamWorks’ beloved 2010 animated classic brings the Viking village of Berk, and the bond between Hiccup and Toothless to life. Directed by Dean DeBlois, who helmed the original trilogy, the adaptation promises a visually immersive experience while staying true to the themes of courage, compassion, and growing up. While fans are eager to see their favorite characters in a new light, early reactions have raised concerns over whether the live-action format can recapture the original’s heart and charm.

28 Years Later

Release Date: June 20
Directed by Danny Boyle, “28 Years Later, “continues the harrowing legacy of the “28 Days” and “28 Weeks Later” films. Set decades after the initial outbreak of the infection, this third installment reunites audiences with Cillian Murphy’s character as the world still battles the devastating effects of the rage virus. The film dives deeper into the long-term psychological toll of survival and explores new sociopolitical structures that have emerged post-pandemic.

The trailer quickly went viral, amassing over 10 million views within 48 hours and becoming the second most-watched horror trailer ever.

Boyle’s return has generated high anticipation, and the film is already being called one of 2025’s boldest horror revivals.

F1

Brad Pitt stars as a retired Formula One driver making a comeback to mentor a young talent, played by Damson Idris.

Directed by Joseph Kosinski and co-produced by racing legend Lewis Hamilton, “F1” was filmed during Grand Prix weekends, with Pitt embedded into real pit crews for authenticity.

The film is being praised for its unprecedented access to F1 racing environments and its seamless blending of real-world footage with cinematic storytelling. However, some traditional fans have expressed concern over Hollywood dramatization diluting the sport’s technical integrity.

Superheroes and prehistoric adventures

Jurassic World: Rebirth
Release Date: July 2
“Jurassic World: Rebirth” continues the saga of humans and dinosaurs coexisting in a fragile balance.

With a fresh cast including Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali and Jonathan Bailey, and a script by original “Jurassic Park” writer David Koepp, the film seeks to revitalize the franchise after mixed reactions to previous entries.

The film has generated excitement and controversy. While many fans are eager for the franchise’s return, some have expressed concerns over the introduction of genetically mutated dinosaurs, fearing it may deviate from the series’ original themes.

James Gunn’s reboot of the iconic superhero features David Corenswet as Clark Kent, who plays Superman, and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.

The film presents a more nuanced and relatable Superman, exploring his dual identity and moral dilemmas in a modern context. With a fresh narrative and character development, this installment aims to redefine the Man of Steel for a new generation.

The teaser emphasizes hope and features John Williams’ iconic score, generating excitement among fans.

The reveal of Superman’s new costume drew mixed reactions; some people praised its classic look, while others called it “goofy” or “cheap.”

A flying scene in the teaser sparked CGI rumors due to Superman’s distorted face, but Gunn clarified it was a wide-angle lens effect, not digital alteration.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps
Release Date: July 25

Comedic twists and animated fun

The Bad Guys 2
Release Date: August 1
DreamWorks Animation’s “The Bad Guys 2” brings back the lovable crew of reformed villains as they face new challenges and adversaries.

The original voice cast returns, including Sam Rockwell and Awkwafina. This time, the reformed villains face an all-female crime crew, adding a fresh twist to the story.

While the film has generated excitement, it has also faced some controversy. One notable absence from the returning cast is Stephen Tobolowsky, who portrayed Mr. Bates, the strict high school teacher in the original film. Despite outreach from the production team, Tobolowsky declined to reprise his role, later citing concerns about how much creative continuity and purpose his character would serve in the new storyline.

Nobody 2

The sequel explores the consequences of Hutch’s actions and the challenges of balancing family life with his violent tendencies.
