For Central Penn College baseball player Cameron Smiley, success on the field has always been about much more than wins and losses. The Perry County native has built his athletic career on a foundation of faith, discipline and a commitment to being the best version of himself every day.

Smiley’s love for sports began at a young age. Encouraged by his parents, he spent his childhood competing in baseball, soccer and running events. While he enjoyed all three sports, baseball quickly became his passion.

His parents were more than just supporters in the stands. They were coaches, mentors and role models who taught him the value of hard work and accountability. Those lessons would shape not only the athlete he became but also the person he is today.

Throughout much of his baseball career, Smiley played both catcher and pitcher before focusing exclusively on pitching during his senior year of high school. As he entered high school, he realized baseball was more than just a hobby and set a goal of playing at the collegiate level. Achieving that dream required countless hours of practice.

After arriving at Central Penn College, Smiley continued to grow as a player. During his junior and senior years, he was introduced to a more analytics-based approach to baseball. The transition from traditional coaching methods to a younger coach who emphasized data and analytics gave him a new perspective on the game. While the coaching styles were very different, Smiley appreciated both approaches and believes they helped him reach his full potential on the mound.

Among the many memories he has made during his baseball career, the 2024 ESAC championship season stands out the most. During his sophomore year, Smiley faced personal challenges away from the field but remained committed to his teammates and the program. Winning a championship while contributing significantly to the team’s success made the accomplishment especially meaningful and memorable.

Away from baseball, Smiley credits his faith in God and the support of his fiancée, Hailey, for helping him stay motivated during difficult times. He hopes people recognize the impact faith can have on overcoming adversity and the importance of being a positive influence on others.

Looking ahead, he plans to marry next year, continue his career in banking and remain involved in baseball. His advice to the Central Penn College community is simple: Put your faith in God, hold yourself accountable and never take time for granted because it goes by faster than you think.
