Coming from Altoona, Pennsylvania, Sam Royer has embraced a different path during his baseball career at Central Penn College. A right-handed pitcher for the Knights, Royer’s journey in baseball has been shaped by family support, personal growth and a strong sense of faith.
Royer first became involved in baseball after watching his older brother play the sport. Encouraged by his parents to give the game a try, he quickly developed a passion for baseball that continued to grow throughout his childhood.
Growing up, Royer said his parents played a major role in supporting him both academically and athletically, regardless of wins, losses or performance on the field. That encouragement helped him stay motivated as the game became more competitive over time.
Around the age of 12 or 13, Royer realized baseball was becoming more than just a hobby when he joined a travel team coached by former Major League Baseball coaches. The experience exposed him to a higher level of competition and helped him recognize his potential within the sport.
Over the past two years at Central Penn, Royer’s role has changed significantly. After previously playing third base and contributing as a hitter, he transitioned into becoming a full-time pitcher in 2026. Royer credited his coaches with helping shape both his pitching ability and overall understanding of the game.

While baseball has brought challenges and adversity, Royer said his faith in God has remained one of the biggest sources of strength in his life. He explained that his faith helps guide him through difficult moments both on and off the field.
As Royer became a more respected member of the Knights squad, in his mind, being a teammate extends far beyond performance during games. He believes leadership comes from staying positive, making sacrifices for the team, and helping support teammates during difficult moments throughout the season.
“One of the biggest things is just being there for each other,” Royer said. “A team becomes like family after spending so much time together.”
Some of Royer’s favorite memories at Central Penn came through the program’s championship success. He said winning the first championship of his career (last season, winning the ESAC Championship) remains one of the most meaningful accomplishments he has experienced in baseball.
Looking ahead, Royer hopes to remain connected to the game through coaching opportunities while continuing to grow in his faith and church involvement. He also hopes to build a future centered around family and working alongside his father.
Above all, Royer said he hopes people remember him as someone who stayed true to his beliefs while encouraging others to pursue their goals.
