On October 25, I had the great pleasure of seeing one of my mentors, Kenton Alston, inducted into the Penn State Harrisburg Athletics Hall of Fame.

Alston, Central Penn’s athletics coordinator and athletics success coach, attended Penn State Harrisburg in the fall of 2008 and finished in the spring of 2012. He finished with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.

While Alston was a phenomenal student in the classroom, he was also a phenomenal athlete on the court.

Alston put up some amazing attributes and stats during his four years at school.

He was, for instance, a four-time all-conference honoree, scored 1,713 points – second in program history, captured 807 rebounds – also second in program history – set the record for made field goals – 713 – and is the all-time block leader, with 290 blocks. He played all positions during his time at Penn State Harrisburg.

Alston was also featured in Sports Illustrated “Faces in the Crowd,” and led his team to four consecutive postseason berths and two NEAC (now the United East Conference) championship game appearances.

It’s safe to say that Alston ‘s undeniable will to be better than his opponent pushed him to the top.

On the stage during the ceremony at the campus, just outside Middletown, Alston was overwhelmed with emotions while accepting the honor conferred on him.

He gave a shoutout to all his family members: his mother, Keiko Summerville; his fiancé, Martika Porr; his daughter, Kendall Alston; and his sister, Marika Gulledge.

Alston’s final message of the ceremony was to his daughter, Kendall: “I love you so much, and I am so proud of you and the person you are becoming. You can do anything you want, as long as you put your mind to it. You will be great in this world. Just keep working hard. I love you.”

A heartfelt message touching others who were there to celebrate this great achievement.

Congratulations Kenton Alston on being inducted into the Penn State Harrisburg Hall of Fame!
